Works
Overview
My work is interested in objects and narratives of safety and their direct connection with fear, seeking to investigate my relationship with these themes central to an upbringing as an American boy drawn to Americana. With safety, comfort, and fear often fetishized as tools of influence, I continue to investigate this relationship through the use of altered found objects and installation environments that bind themselves between these positions.
Balancing a refined aesthetic and technical ingenuity, known objects’ functions are altered. Much of my work relies on the object’s inherent meaning as a foundation to then later build on. In many cases, the objects’ utility is then altered through the use of mechanical equipment like engine hoists, motors, and other programmed electronics to manipulate their intended operation, calling on the viewers’ relation to the dynamic symbols within the works to critique the influence of safety and fear at play.
